Job Description
The University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design invites applications for the position of Business Manager. This position reports to the Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) and serves as an integral member of the College of Architecture and Design's (CoAD) finance and administrative team. The position supports the DFA in providing professional guidance and management of financial, administrative, and human resource-related processes within the college.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Financial Operations Oversight and Compliance
- Advise on fiscal matters to ensure compliance with UT policies.
- Evaluate expenditures and address questionable transactions.
- Review and approve transactions, payroll, and monthly ledgers.
- Monitor budget allocations and expenditures for accuracy and compliance.
- Assist with compliance and oversight of sponsored project awards.
Budget Development and Financial Reporting
- Collect and analyze data for budget preparation and reporting.
- Assist with personnel tracking, salary reconciliation, and position budgeting.
- Develop and maintain reporting systems and prepare monthly and annual reports.
- Track restricted fund activity for compliance and balance availability.
Human Resources
- Manage staff human resources: assists with finance team staff oversight, lead new hire processes, establish onboarding, and oversee staff reviews and terminations.
- Manage faculty human resources: assist with faculty hire processes, review additional pay, and assist with annual merit process.
Administrative Operations Oversight
- Develop and implement fiscal operations and policies for CoAD.
- Provide guidance on financial policies and procedures and develop "best practices" guides.
- Assist with strategic planning for CoAD operations.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Management, Accounting/Finance, or related field.
- Experience: Four years of progressively responsible financial and/or HR experience, which may include professional experience managing budgets; financial management; fiscal management of federal, state, and private research grants and contracts; human resources management; and/or policy compliance.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Ability to deal with multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in managing HR and budget-related tasks.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Experience related to pre/post award fiscal management of federal, state, and private research grants and contracts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Master's Degree in Business Administration, Management, Accounting/Finance, or related field.
- Experience: Experience in higher education. Experience with the annual budget preparation process in a higher education setting.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of Banner, Argos, and CAYUSE.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation
- UT market range: MR11
- Anticipated hiring range: Between the 35th and 70th percentile of the market range, depending on experience and qualifications.

The College of Architecture and Design (CoAD) is one of 14 academic colleges at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a Research-1, land-grant university that houses 900+ programs of study. CoAD is situated in both the award-winning Art + Architecture Building on the UTK campus and the FabLab, which is a 20,000 square-foot facility located in town on North Gay Street.
