Job Description

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Cuyamaca College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track English Instructor (Puente & Chicana/o Literature). Primary responsibilities include teaching within and co-coordinating for the Puente Project. Puente is a nationally recognized learning community open to all students that centers Latine students' cultural knowledge and experiences through integrated writing, counseling, and mentorship to support their success, transfer, and leadership development.

We are seeking an equity-minded educator who is deeply committed to culturally responsive, relationship-centered teaching and to supporting Latine and transfronterizo students, who are a vital part of our college community.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
  • Teaching ENGL C1000 Academic Reading and Writing and ENGL C1001 Critical Thinking and Composition within the Puente learning community
  • Serving as Puente Co-Coordinator, working closely with the Puente Counselor and campus partners
  • Teaching Chicana/o Literature and contributing to culturally relevant curriculum
  • Supporting the English Department by teaching general composition, literature, and/or creative writing courses; engaging in professional development and department-specific activities; contributing actively to the mission and goals of the department and the College
  • Facilitating student success through mentorship, college community engagement, and transfer-focused programming


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Puente Program Teaching and Coordination

Teach composition and critical thinking within the Puente cohort model and design culturally responsive curriculum grounded in Latine experiences. Co-coordinate the program through recruitment, events, mentorship, and collaboration with counseling faculty.
  • Discipline Teaching

Teach Chicana/o literature and a range of English courses, including composition, critical thinking, literature, and/or creative writing.
  • Institutional Engagement

Participate in shared governance, curriculum development, outcomes assessment, campus events, and professional learning.
  • Equity & Student Success

Demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the College, including IDEAA principles and equitable access, retention, and success for diverse student populations.

Additional Expectations:
  • Participation in ongoing Puente professional development
  • Flexibility to teach day, evening, and/or online courses
  • Ability to teach, hold events, and participate in functions on-campus, across the region, and throughout the state


Under administrative leadership, it is the responsibility of the regular/contract college instructor to participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses, and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions, and values of the College and District.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR
  • Bachelor's in one of the above and Master's in linguistics, TESL, speech, education (with reading specialization), creative writing, or journalism OR
  • The equivalent.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated ability to teach transfer-level composition and critical thinking, and Chicana/o Literatures
  • Experience with and desire to coordinate programs, plan events, and support cohort-based student success initiatives
  • Experience supporting first-generation, historically and currently underserved, and multilingual students
  • Evidence of culturally responsive, anti-racist, and equity-minded pedagogy
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and goals of community college students


OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience teaching in or working with the Puente Project or similar learning communities
  • Ability to teach other literature and/or creative writing courses
  • Experience teaching effectively in a variety of modalities (online, hyflex, in-person)
  • Experience working collaboratively, solving problems, and managing differing values and perspectives among colleagues and students
  • Spanish language proficiency (highly desirable)
