Job Description
The Herbert College of Agriculture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is looking for vibrant, dynamic individuals interested in working in a team environment dedicated to student success. The Student Success Advisor fulfills a vital role in providing comprehensive academic advising and supporting holistic student success for undergraduate students pursuing or interested in majors or minors within the Herbert College of Agriculture.

The position is an exempt, 12-month, full-time, non-tenure track staff position that provides an exciting opportunity to be a part of UTK's advising strategic plan that integrates academic and career advising with self-exploration, leadership, and experience learning.

This is an on-campus position with some hybrid/remote work schedule flexibility.


Responsibilities
  • Providing tailored, developmental advising to a diverse population of students to assist in course selection, academic planning, and career and educational goal-setting.
  • Assisting students with understanding and navigating University, College, and program-level policies, processes, procedures, and requirements
  • Monitoring student progress and intervening as necessary to address academic concerns or barriers to success
  • Maintaining regular communication with advisees and maintain up-to-date accurate student records utilizing the University's prescribed software
  • Guiding students in identifying co-curricular, experiential learning, career, and leadership opportunities in line with their strengths, interests, and values
  • Conducting incoming first-year and transfer new student advising sessions
  • Promoting student learning, development, and personal growth to empower self-sufficiency
  • Fostering and promoting students' connection to faculty mentors by collaborating with faculty and guiding students toward opportunities that engage them with faculty in their chosen discipline.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Master's degree at time of hire
  • Experience:
    • Experience working with students in a college or university setting
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Knowledge of university policy, procedure, and curricular information.
    • Ability to utilize technology that supports both students and professional practice (for example: MS Word, Excel, Student Information Systems, Degree Audits, Internet/On-line Resources.)
    • Strong written, oral communication, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to multi-task.
    • Ability to relate effectively to students, faculty, support staff, alumni, and parents in an academic advising capacity.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment visa status.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Knowledge of academic advising practices and student development theory.
    • Knowledge of issues surrounding diversity and inclusion
    • Ability to develop, implement and assess programs for advisees based on their academic interests and career goals.

Our Ideal Candidate Would Have
  • Education:
    • Master's in Education, Higher Education, College Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Student Development, Counseling, or related area.
  • Experience:
    • Thorough working knowledge of academic advising practices and student development theory
    • Advising experience in higher education
    • Passion for agriculture
    • Working knowledge of student information systems such as DARS, BANNER, SalesForce, or related software
    • Experience working with a diverse student population
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Experience in conducting assessments and implementing improvements
    • Experience in developing and creating student retention strategies
    • Experience in working in a team-oriented environment
    • Experience in working and collaborating with faculty and campus partners
    • Experience conducting first-year and/or transfer orientations

  • Onsite with possibility of limited remote work

Compensation and Benefits
  • UT market range: MR08
  • Anticipated hiring range: $52,000-$55,000
