SUMMARY:

The Engagement Lead: Chemistry & Physical Science (Engagement Lead) ensures the mission of Arizona Science Center: to inspire, educate, and engage curious minds through science. The Engagement Lead provides exemplary STEM engagement both inside the museum and outside, with organizations across the state.

Within the Informal Learning team, the Engagement Lead develops, prepares, and facilitates engaging Chemistry & Physical Science activities, demonstrations, programs, and camps. The Engagement Lead will collaborate with team members to foster engagement for success in learning, learn new content for traveling exhibitions, and provide animal husbandry for Arizona Science Center's small invertebrate collection.

The Engagement Lead will oversee the implementation of chemistry and physical science materials within the Arizona Science Center, coordinating with other departments as needed to advise on exhibits and programming. The Engagement Lead will engage guests in various hands-on activities and explore chemistry and physical science concepts through gallery interpretation and on-stage demonstrations.

Overall, the Engagement Lead will offer inclusive and exciting STEM experiences by serving as an outgoing, friendly, and team-oriented leader with Arizona Science Center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Chemistry & Physical Science Content and Programs

  • Manage and maintain organization, safety, and usage of laboratory space and equipment
  • Work in collaboration with supervisors to provide team training and development for Chemistry & Physical Science, including chemical safety and inventory management
  • Lead the development and facilitation of fun, engaging Physical Science activities and programs for guests and families of all ages
  • Manage and coordinate maintenance of Tesla coils and Van de Graaff generator
  • Coordinate between departments to plan and execute after-hours events and themed programming

Museum Floor and Guest Engagement

  • Facilitate activities and programs for guests and families of all ages
  • Provide customer service and build positive relationships with guests
  • Provide exhibit-related educational programming and explore with guests on exhibits inside the museum
  • Conduct basic animal husbandry for our small collection of invertebrates
  • Set up and clean experiments, labs, demonstrations, and activities
  • Work with Exhibit Technicians to coordinate exhibit maintenance needs
  • Prepare, present, and facilitate hands-on STEM activities for students in on-site camps, workshops, and other onsite workshops
  • Facilitate activities in onsite makerspace

Overall Duties

  • Supervise activities and experiments to ensure safe and enjoyable experiences
  • Sort supplies and maintain upkeep of materials and exhibits
  • Provide excellent communication with team members and collaborate on projects and programs
  • Research and develop inquiry-based activities for the floor, camps, and clubs
  • Assist with projects in the Informal Learning Department
  • Assist Arizona Science Center team members in delivering the mission of the center

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no managerial or supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform in this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty. The requirements below are a representative combination of various knowledge, skills, and abilities that would enable an individual to be qualified for this position.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • B.S. or higher in the physical science field is required, with a degree in chemistry strongly preferred
  • Experience in a lab setting, following safety guidelines, and maintaining equipment required
  • Experience communicating physical science and other STEM concepts to an audience preferred but not required
  • Experience with student-directed, inquiry-based, experiential learning approaches is preferred but not required
  • Experience in planning and coordinating activities preferred but not required
  • Acquisition of a food handler's card and fingerprint card may be required and paid for by the Science Center
