Loyola University Chicago's (LUC) School of Environmental Sustainability (SES) invites applications for a full-time teaching faculty position in Environmental Science, beginning in August 2021. The SES seeks to diversify its faculty and is particularly encouraging underrepresented minorities, women, and people with disabilities to apply. The successful candidate will start at the rank of Lecturer beginning in August 2021, and the position will be reviewed every three years for renewal and promotion. We are seeking candidates who can teach introductory environmental science, and intermediate-level courses focusing on environmental chemistry. Expertise in basic chemistry, pollution chemistry, biogeochemistry and ecology of soils, aquatic systems, ground water, and/or air are all desirable. Preferred applicants will be motivated to advance the SES mission.

Loyola University Chicago is committed to environmental sustainability, having transformed its campuses to meet energy, water, and waste efficiencies that have consistently ranked the University in the top 5% of green campuses nationally. The new School of Environmental Sustainability is growing quickly and currently serves 380 undergraduate and 70 graduate students. It is housed within a state-of-the-art geo-thermally heated/cooled building complex containing a 3,100 sq ft greenhouse, aquaponics facilities, a biodiesel production facility, teaching & research labs, environmental analytical lab, ecotoxicology lab, a GIS Lab, and a ‘green' dormitory. The university prioritizes sustainability with 13 energy efficient LEED certified buildings, permeable pavement, green roof installations, and student-run urban gardens supplying the LUC Farmer's Market. The Loyola University Retreat & Ecology Campus (LUREC) has a wetland restoration project in a 20-acre wetland, a 5-acre organic farm, and is a venue for three-week summer field courses and for faculty and student research in sustainable agriculture, ecology, and wetland restoration. We are seeking candidates who can teach Candidates for the position must clearly demonstrate their potential for excellence in teaching and devotion to student success. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching introductory environmental science for both SES majors and non-majors, and teach intermediate-level courses focusing on environmental chemistry which include courses in soil ecology, water, and/or air with emphases on basic chemistry, biogeochemical cycling and pollution. These courses have and can have laboratories that emphasize skill building in both the field and laboratory. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop courses in their specialty that enhance the SES curriculum. Candidates should have a Ph.D., but ABD will be considered. Candidates of color and those with at least a year of experience teaching undergraduate courses as the instructor of record will be given strongest consideration.
